We talk about balance like it’s a scale. Two sides, equal weight, everything in perfect equilibrium. Fifty-fifty. That’s the goal, right?
Except that’s not how life works.
And it’s definitely not how life works when you’re building a business, raising a family, showing up in your community, and trying to be intentional about your own growth all at the same time. I think we need to stop measuring balance across months or years or even days. That framework is killing us.
What if balance wasn’t about time at all?
The ambitious women I work with—and I include myself in this—we’re not ambitious in just one domain.
We’re ambitious as business builders. We’re ambitious as mothers, partners, friends, community members.
We show up and we want to show up well. We want to do things at the highest level we can. That’s not a flaw. That’s who we are.
But here’s what that means: some weeks, your children are sick and they need your focus. Some weeks, your extended family needs you. Some weeks, it’s your marriage, your friendships, your own growth.
And some weeks—absolutely—it’s your business. It’s a product launch. It’s a website rebuild. It’s the work that only you can do, and yes, it might mean longer hours.
That’s not failure. That’s priority.
The permission you actually need
Stop measuring balance across a month or a year. Stop even measuring it across a week. Start asking: what needs my focus right now? And then give it your full attention. Give it the best version of you.
Not the guilty version. Not the version that’s half-present because you’re mentally dividing yourself across five other things.
The best version.
A
nd then—this is the part that matters—know that it’s going to change. Next week will be different. Next month will be different. The priorities will shift. The focus will move. And that’s not a sign you’re doing it wrong.
That’s just life. And when you stop expecting every week to look the same, when you stop measuring yourself against an impossible fifty-fifty standard, you actually find a rhythm that works.
It’s not static. It’s not perfect. But it’s yours. And it’s sustainable because it’s real.
You’re not failing because this week isn’t balanced. You’re succeeding because you’re being intentional about where you’re pouring yourself—and you’re okay with that changing.
That’s the whole thing.
